Admission Requirements (Art History)

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In addition to meeting requirements for graduate study at George Mason, applicants should hold a BA in Art History or a minor in Art History that includes two courses at the 400 level, or have an equivalent background. Candidates without the requisite background may be admitted provisionally. In addition to the application materials required for graduate study, applicants should submit the following:

  1. University Online Application
  2. Departmental Application
  3. Two letters of recommendation from art history professors or others closely associated with the candidate’s pre-professional activities
  4. GRE Scores. This requirement is waived for students who received their undergraduate degree 10 or more years ago, or who hold another graduate degree
  5. Goals statement that explains student’s interest in art history graduate study
  6. Writing sample
  7. Official transcripts from previous institutions of higher education. Foreign students must have their transcripts evaluated by a university-approved accrediting service

Students interested in assistantships must submit an assistantship application by April 15 to the address below.

NOTE: University applications are due on April 15 for Fall admission and on November 1 for Spring admission. Assistantship applications are due April 15. All materials should be sent to the following address (not the department):
