History Major Wins Fellowship to Study Nonprofit Leadership

Mason History major Desmond Moffitt has been selected as a Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute Fellow.  The PPIA is a summer program to help underrepresented students prepare for careers in international affairs. This fellowship will provide funding for Mr. Moffitt to study nonprofit leadership at Princeton University this summer.

Mr. Moffitt is an Honors College Junior pursuing a History B.A. with Dance and Linguistic minors.  Originally from Kentucky, he came to Mason as a recipient of the Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship. As a freshman he co-founded an Honors College service organization called Mason U and served as its Community Empowerment and Research Coordinator for 2 years before studying abroad. While currently studying abroad for 2 semesters at the Freie Universität in Berlin, Germany, Mr. Moffitt says, “My abroad experience has shown me the invaluable attributes of a global perspective and cultural immersion in one’s college career, especially for future educators. One day I hope to implement a policy that enables all aspiring educators to take this global perspective into low socioeconomic and underrepresented classrooms across the U.S.”
