Meredith Lair Joins Seven Other OAH Distinguished Lecturers

Congratulations are in order for several members of the Department of History and Art History whom the Organization of American Historians (OAH) has named Distinguished Lecturers. The Distinguished Lectureship program began in 1981, its purpose to generate a roster of top-quality speakers on United States history. That roster now stands at more than 400 members, eight of whom hail from George Mason. The OAH president-elect appoints the Distinguished Lecturers, who donate the fees from at least one lecture per year to the organization.

Dr. Rosemarie Zagarri, University Professor and an appointee to the OAH list, considers it a good gauge of the state of the field in United States History. “The OAH Distinguished Lecturer Program,” Dr. Zagarri observed, “is a ‘who’s who’ of the most prominent scholars working in the field of American history today.” Mason’s latest honoree, Meredith Lair, spoke enthusiastically about the program as an opportunity for service. “OAH does so much to encourage humanities education, scholarship, and historical preservation,” said Dr. Lair. “I am delighted to be able to contribute to that mission by serving as a Distinguished Lecturer.”
