Section Information for Spring 2016

This course surveys the history of Europe from ancient Greece to the present. Within this broad overview, students will examine the milestones that are the basis of what is commonly called “western civilization” - from the impact of the Roman empire and the rise of Christianity, through the Renaissance and Reformation, to the makings of a continent that eventually dominated the globe. The course will conclude with an overview of the violent 20th century during which most of Europe was devastated by two world wars and was divided between two “outside powers” - the United States & the Soviet Union - before being reunited at century’s end.
