Section Information for Fall 2012

Over 20 years ago, in 1989, the Cold War unraveled with the fall of the Berlin Wall. This edifice had divided Germany and Europe. As a result of World War II and its aftermath, the Western Allies, including the U.S. and the Soviet Union and its allies, confronted each other under the possible threat of nuclear war. Germany was at the epicenter of the Cold War. How did its history directly bear on this confrontation? This lecture and discussion course will examine the history of Germany and Austria from the late 18th century to the present. In addition to class lectures and discussion, we will be seeing films related to this history, have guest speakers and other out-of-class activities. The German Embassy has awarded George Mason University a grant for the Fall 2012 semester. As a result, we will include a number of "campus week" activities during the month of October, culminating in a free Octoberfest gala! Readings include novels and non-fiction works and online sources. There will be a midterm examination and final examination.
