This course will examine war and American society from the colonial period to the post-Cold War era, including how military institutions, war, and the preparation for war have affected American society; and how Americans have thought about military service, experienced war, and made peace throughout their history. Special emphasis will be placed on civil-military relations and the role of war and militarism in American culture. Evaluation will be made on the basis of written exams, papers, and participation in in-class discussions.
