This course examines the world of the Islamic Mediterranean from the 7th-16th centuries). The Mediterranean Sea, like other seas and oceans, was the site of intense interaction between peoples, in this case between Europe and the Islamic world. This interaction shaped the societies, economies, political institutions and cultures of areas of the Islamic world such as Spain, North Africa, Egypt, Palestine, and Ottoman Anatolia, which will be examined as case studies in this course. Specific topics covered will include the development of the Islamic state in North Africa, the Islamic city in Egypt, minority relations in Ottoman territories, minority conflict during the Crusades in Palestine, and cultural hybridity in Islamic Spain. By the end of the course, students should have a familiarity the main events, dynamics and debates surrounding the development of the Islamic societies of the Mediterranean Sea, as well as how their development shaped and was shaped by interaction with the European societies of this sea.View 4 Other Sections of this Course in this Semester »
