Section Information for Fall 2010

The Roman imperial tradition became a benchmark for Western Civilization. Later Byzantine, Frankish/French, German and Russian leaders would measure their success against the Roman model. With its initial growth during the Roman Republic, the Roman Empire established itself under the Julio-Claudian emperors (27 BCE-68 CE), and flourished under the Flavian dynasty (69-96) and the five adoptive emperors (96-192). This was the Pax Romana: the Roman Peace. Since history is in a large part biography, we will examine the Principate of Augustus, the rule or misrule of such emperors as Caligula, Nero, Domitian and Commodus, as well as the military leadership of Vespasian and Trajan, and the artistic and philosophic natures of Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius. What political, military, social, economic, and intellectual benefits did the Empire offer and what did Roman citizens, subjects and slaves pay for the Roman Peace? We will look at ancient texts and modern interpretations, including tapes and films.
