Section Information for Spring 2016

O.J. Simpson. Lance Armstrong. Tonya Harding. “Shoeless” Joe Jackson. Jim Thorpe. Pete Rose. All, in some way or another, were principal figures in the greatest scandals of American sports. This course explores the history of these scandals and more. Students will consider the historical impact of drugs, organized crime, gambling, celebrity culture, international politics, the obsession with winning, and notions of professionalism and amateurism on sport. Students will also consider what constituted a scandal and why. Less-popular scandals, such as those involving Rosie Ruiz, the imposter marathoner, and Danny Almonte, the alleged little leaguer, will be examined as well.
