This course will begin with the discovery and settlement of Virginia from the early 16th century and will conclude with Gabriel’s Rebellion in Richmond and the election of Thomas Jefferson as president of the United States. During the colonial period, emphasis will be upon the founding of the colony, the development of representative government and race relations, the “golden age” of the Virginia gentry, and the coming of the Revolution. Virginia’s contributions to the founding of the federal republic will be stressed through 1800.
