Sunni and Shia Muslims are fighting each other in much of the Islamic world, from Iraq and Syria to Pakistan and Malaysia.  What are the reasons for the hostilities?  What is the relationship of Sunni and Shia Islam to each other?  What is Shia Islam? Hist 387 will go beyond and behind the headlines to explore both the origins of their disputes, as well as the distinct history, ritual and religious experience of Shii Muslims through a variety of readings, documentaries, and internet sources.
