Section Information for Fall 2012

This course serves as an introduction to academic military history. We will explore a variety of facets of the field--how it is defined, how it differs from popular military history, and how its inquiry has changed over the decades--by analyzing some influential classics and some of the most important recent work in the discipline. The reading list will emphasize American military history, though not exclusively. Written assignments will include brief book reviews and a longer historiographic essay. This course fulfills the “1861-1914” or the “1914 to the Present” distribution requirement in US history, but not both.
