This course provides an introduction to the language of the visual arts and a foundation for individual understanding and enjoyment of art. This class will focus on how art communicates, how to analyze and interpret it, and how we can see it as a cultural product that reveals something about the society that produced it. The first part of the course covers the basics of art theory and practice. The second part is a brief survey from ancient Egypt to the present, focusing on materials and techniques, modes of patronage, and social history and cultural context.  Class sessions will move between lecture and in-class discussions.
