Section Information for Fall 2016

This course will introduce students to art from a variety of cultures and historical periods by exploring how religious narratives have been presented in visual forms. Examples will be taken from the art of cultures across the globe with emphasis on those works which relate to important mythological themes. Tales of the world’s creation, conceptions of the afterlife, stories of love, the quests of heroes and similar themes will serve as weekly topics and provide the opportunities to explore the deeds of great champions, bold deities, and clever tricksters. We will read the stories associated with these figures and look at the ways their actions have been immortalized in sculpture, architecture, and painting. This course fulfils the Mason Core arts requirement.
