Section Information for Summer 2015

This course offers a chronological survey of Western art from Renaissance to the present time. Analyzing major artistic developments, which occurred during this period, the course will place art works and artists within their respective social, political, philosophical, and religious contexts. Giotto, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, Rembrandt, Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, Klimt, Malevich and many more different artists and artistic movements will be examined during this course. As part of the coursework, students will be required to visit art museums in Washington, DC. This course fulfills the Mason Core Fine Arts requirement and has no prerequisite.

Major periods, monuments, and themes of Western art and architecture. Introduces Washington, D.C., museum collections and a historical framework for further study in art history. Covers the art of the Renaissance, the baroque period, and modern Europe and the Americas. Notes: Designed as a two-course sequence, but each part may be taken independently without prerequisite. Limited to three attempts.
