Section Information for Spring 2017
This fully online course surveys major developments in artistic expression throughout the history of Western civilization, beginning with the rebirth of classicism during the Renaissance and continuing through the rise of the avant-garde in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Working through the readings, assignments, and other course materials, students will become familiar with significant works of Western art and will be able to identify the characteristics of major artistic styles and periods. Gaining an understanding and appreciation of these art objects will entail becoming acquainted with their formal appearance, content, and context in order to determine what these elements reveal about the people and cultures that produced them.
Satisfies General Education requirement for Arts.
