Section Information for Spring 2011

German and Austrian art both mirrored developments in Europe and had its own distinctive characteristics, molded by central European history. The course, consisting of lectures and discussion, will examine the development of painting, graphics, sculpture and architecture in Germany and Austria from the period of the French Revolution in the late 18th century to the present day. In addition, the course will link the artistic developments to the larger political and cultural scene, investigating the role of artists in society, issues of censorship, the rise of museums and war memorials, art and war, and the relationship of art to other aesthetic forms, such as music and literature. In addition to readings, a midterm and final examination, assignments will include museum visits, film, and guest lectures.
