This course will explore the role of the portrait as vehicle for self-fashioning in North America from the 18th century to the present. We will study the relationship between portraiture, identity and class mobility across a range of mediums, from silhouettes, daguerreotypes and cartes de visites, to the caricatures of Covarrubias, the photographs of Nikki S. Lee, and the paintings of Kehinde Wiley. The class will culminate with a discussion of the rise of the "selfie" as a cultural force.

Developments in visual culture and the changing status of art practitioners throughout these periods. Focus is either chronological (Colonial Period, Gilded Age) or thematic (19th-century genre scenes, the American landscape and national identity). Notes: May be repeated when topic is different. May be repeated within the degree for a maximum 6 credits.
