BEYOND OBJECTS Among the most notable and far-reaching changes in artistic production defining much contemporary art is a move away from art as a practice based on making objects. This seminal shift away from object-making led to innumerable changes in both the production and reception of art since the 1970s. This seminar will investigate some of the new directions in art that this rejection of object-making made possible, some examples are: the contingency of the art object, the emphasis on process, new conceptions of space, and art as exchange. Along with these different ways of producing and thinking about art, other considerable developments in art that result from these new perspectives will be addressed, particularly the changing role of the artist, the “spectator” as active participant in the work of art, and the new forms of perception that are enacted by these new works of art. Students will examine and discuss these new practices in terms of artist statements, prevalent theories of art, and critical responses. Ultimately, the student will gain a greater understanding of the critical issues surrounding contemporary art.
