Section Information for Spring 2016
This course surveys major developments in artistic expression throughout the history of Western civilization, beginning with the rebirth of classicism during the Renaissance and continuing through the rise of the avant-garde in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Through the readings, class lectures, assignments and museum visits, students will become familiar with major works of art and will be able to identify the characteristics of major artistic styles and periods. Gaining an understanding and appreciation of these art objects will entail becoming acquainted with their formal appearance, the underlying content, contextual implications, and what these elements reveal about the people and cultures that produced them.
