This course is an introduction to the art of Latin America from the period before the arrival of the Europeans up to the modern era. The Olmec, Moche, and Aztec peoples will come alive through their artwork. Works by the artists of the colonial period will reveal the complex interplay of European and indigenous symbolism. Modern Latin American art has had a profound impact across the globe, as will be evident in the study of paintings by Diego Rivera and David Siqueiros and the architecture of Luis Barragán.
