Section Information for Spring 2012

This course examines American Art from the early Ashcan School realists and the Armory Show through the Depression. Whether seen through the lens of the Ashcan realists or early abstractionists our theme will be society and culture in the early 20th century. We will focus on multiple forms of painting and early photography and issues of Art and National Identity that preoccupied the artists around Stieglitz and his circle. As we examine these works, we will also be charting the course of American history and culture to see how the values of the Progressive era, the postwar world of prosperity and technological growth, and the Great Depression are manifested in art.
