Section Information for Spring 2015

This course examines the history and historiography of major U.S. monuments and the process of remembrance in U.S. Art and Culture beginning with the Civil War.  We will frame the discussion with recent studies in the field on memory, memorials and the memorializing process and select a few case studies for closer analysis.  This is a seminar with substantial reading assignments and the expectation of class participation.  Students will write several short papers and engage in a longer project.
