Introduction to historical method is the preparation for the capstone course, HIST 499, in the history major. As such, it is an opportunity for class members to concentrate on the steps involved in the process of writing an original, extended research paper in which they synthesize the skills that they have honed during their undergraduate majors. This particular offering of the seminar will focus on the Gilded Age, the period in American history roughly between 1877 and 1900 and a time notable for its rapid technological advances, spectacular economic growth, political corruption, nascent reform, labor unionization, and excess of all kinds. As such, it provides opportunities for a wide range of research topics, ranging from nineteenth-century temperance, civil service reform, bi-metallism, interstate commerce, and advertising to immigration, western expansion, Populism, and varieties of vice. The seminar’s twin goals are, first, to read a basic text that will introduce the history of the period and suggest ideas for further research and, second, to write an extended, formal essay on a topic relevant to the course topic.
