Section Information for Spring 2014
This course covers the historical background, origins and evolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict. We will examine contending narratives over history, religion, politics and justice. Emphasis is also placed on analyzing the interplay between ideology and policy as well as diplomacy and conflict resolution that have manifested in the transformation of conflict in the post-1967 period. Arab, Israeli, Palestinian, and international perspectives on issues such as land, security, recognition, refugees, identity, terrorism, morality, international law, and the use of force will be closely scrutinized. The final part of the course will explore the Oslo agreements including opposition to the peace process in Israel, the Palestinian territories and the Arab world, and the impact of the al-Aqsa uprising, the September 11 attacks and the Arab spring on the Arab-Israeli-Palestinian conflict zone and the Middle East as a whole.
