HIST 387: Topics in Global History

HIST 387-B01: British Empire
(Summer 2012)

Section Information for Summer 2012

In the late nineteenth century, Britain controlled nearly 40% of the world’s territories. She was a major participant in World War I and II and ranked the premier naval power in the world. The end of the British Empire in the mid-twentieth century led to the creation of numerous new nation-states around the globe such as Israel, Pakistan, and Ireland. The intent of this course is to help undergraduates situate the British Empire within its global context, to examine the dominant personalities and their roles in shaping British colonial policy, and to understand the issues of decolonization that led to the creation of new nation-states and enduring problems today. We will begin briefly with the North American colonies and then turn to the east, the “Second British Empire,” including British India, Australia, Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. Particular topics will include British Cyprus, World War I and the Irish Rebellion, the “Scramble for Africa,” the Opium Wars, and the creation of Israel and Pakistan, and end with the remnants of the Empire in Hong Kong.
