HIST 565-001: Problems in African History: Indian Ocean Worlds
(Fall 2010)

07:20 PM to 10:00 PM W

Section Information for Fall 2010

This course introduces the history of the Indian Ocean region in the modern period. In the tradition of Ferdinand Braudel’s scholarship on the Mediterranean Sea and others’ more recent work on the Atlantic World, the course examines linkages between coastal society, oceanic travel, and inland empires of the Indian Ocean World. Course readings will strike a balance between larger trans-Indian Ocean trends and local histories focusing on both the broad sweep of world history and sub regional historiographies in Africa, Arabia, and South Asia. Topics will include port cities and hinterlands; trade Diasporas, Islam, slavery, migration, and eras of globalization.
