The economic crisis of the 1930s resulted in fascinating artistic and cultural developments as well as fundamental changes in U.S. politics and government. This course will examine the 1930s U.S. in depth from a variety of perspectives: political, economic, social, cultural, regional, and environmental. Students will gain expertise on the period while also exploring the many ways historians have approached the study of the past. Assignments will include critical book reviews, oral presentations, and a historiography project that will allow students to make connections either within the timeframe of this important decade or across a broader sweep of the twentieth century (This course fulfills the 1914 to the present distribution requirement in US history.)
