HIST 698: Creating Software for History

HIST 698-001: Digital Praxis:Programming
(Fall 2012)

07:20 PM to 10:00 PM R

Research Hall 402

Section Information for Fall 2012

This course will cover some foundational technical skills useful for digital history research, including database design, PHP, Javascript, command line programming, and techniques for acquiring, manipulating, and visualizing historical data--especially for mapping and text mining. Students will be expected to complete programming assignments each week and progressively combine the various skills to complete more sophisticated assignments and a final project (ideally part of a larger research project). Exercises and tutorials will try to address real-world digital history problems with the hope that students will be able employ these techniques in their own work after the course. While no particular programming knowledge is required, students must have some experience writing code in a text editor and using FTP software. It is highly recommended that enrollees have completed and enjoyed HIST 696.

HIST 698 001 students should contact Nicole Roth (nroth@gmu.edu) to enroll in this course.
