Evoking Place: Fifty Years of Landscapes from the Art Museum of the Americas

Opening reception for a student-curated exhibition event

Wednesday, April 12, 2017 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM EDT
Art & Design Building, Fine Arts Gallery, First Floor

This exhibition, which runs from April 12-29, showcases 30 landscapes by 29 artists from 14 countries selected from the permanent collection of the Art Museum of the Americas in Washington DC. It is completely curated by students in Michele Greet's ARTH 495/ARTH 599 courses.

The paintings, prints, mixed media collages, textiles, and drawings, made between 1945 and 1995, present unique interpretations of the natural topographies of Latin America as well as places entirely imagined by the artists. Rendered in a wide variety of styles, ranging from figural to completely abstract, the works displayed here were either inspired by place or conjure place. Latin American artists pushed the genre in new directions, however, and this exhibition highlights works that challenge the traditional concept of landscape.

Opening Reception: Wednesday, April 12, 7:00–9:00 p.m.

Gallery Talks by Mason students: April 14, 21, and 28, 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
