Carol Mattusch
Professor
Carol C. Mattusch, Mathy Professor of Art History, teaches courses on Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art and archaeology and on the rediscovery of classical antiquity. She is also a member of the Honors faculty and of the Classical Studies faculty. Her specialty is ancient sculpture, in particular the connections among technology, artistic styles, and the market in the ancient Mediterranean world. Her publications include: The Villa dei Papiri at Herculaneum: Life and Afterlife of a Sculpture Collection (J. Paul Getty Museum, 2005); The Victorious Youth (J. Paul Getty Museum, 1997); Classical Bronzes: The Art and Craft of Greek and Roman Statuary (Cornell University Press, 1996); The Fire of Hephaistos: Large Classical Bronzes from North American Collections, the catalogue for an exhibition that she curated (Harvard University Art Museums, 1996); and Greek Bronze Statuary: From the Beginnings through the Fifth Century B.C. (Cornell University Press, 1988). Her books have won awards from the Archaeological Institute of America (1997) and from the College Art Association (2006). She is George Mason University’s representative to the Managing Committee of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, and she currently serves on the Executive Committee of that body. She chaired the Planning Committee for the meeting of the International Association of Classical Archaeology in 2003, and she is now curating an exhibition for the National Gallery of Art: Pompeii and the Roman Villa: Art and Culture around the Bay of Naples (Oct. 2008–March 2009). With her students, she is in charge of GMU’s plaster cast project, which involves cleaning, installing, labelling, and publishing 65 plaster casts that were given to GMU by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
