Mack P. Holt

Professor, Director of M.A. Program

Mack P. Holt received his Ph.D in History from Emory University in 1982, and before coming to George Mason in 1989, he taught at Harvard and Vanderbilt universities. He is the author of The Duke of Anjou and the Politique Struggle During the Wars of Religion (Cambridge University Press, 1986) and The French Wars of Religion, 1562-1629 (Cambridge University Press, 1995, 2nd ed. 2005). He is also the editor of four volumes of essays: Society and Institutions in Early Modern France (University of Georgia Press, 1991); Renaissance and Reformation France, 1500-1650, vol. 4 of The Shorter Oxford History of France (Oxford University Press, 2002); Alcohol: A Social and Cultural History (Berg Publishers, 2006); and Adaptations of Calvinism (Ashgate Publishers, “St. Andrews Studies in the Reformation,” 2007). He is currently completing a monograph on popular religion and political culture in the French province of Burgundy during the Reformation, titled “Branches of the Vine: Reformation and Culture in Early Modern Burgundy, 1477-1630” (forthcoming).
