History Minor

For those who love history but do not foresee it as their major career focus, a history minor can be a rewarding option. Because of its flexibility, the history minor may also be shaped to augment a variety of majors.

To receive the minor, students must complete:

  • 18 hours in history
  • 12 of the 18 hours must be upper level (300 and 400 level).
  • 9 hours should be concentrated in a region, topic, or era, if possible, appropriate to the student’s major. Students usually complete the concentration of 9 credits in either Global, U.S., or European history. These three concentrations do not need to be approved by the advisor. Students only need advisor approval if they wish to design a more detailed concentration that does not fall into one of the three mentioned regions.
  • 6 hours (minimum) of the minor course work must be completed at GMU.
  • 2.0 GPA (minimum) in history course work is required to qualify for History minor.
  • 8 credits must be unique to the minor and cannot be used to fulfill General Education, major, College, or second minor requirements.

Interested students should consult with the Undergraduate History Director, Prof. Joan Bristol (jbristol@gmu.edu).

Interdisciplinary Minor

The Department collaborates with various interdisciplinary minors including African American studies, ancient Mediterranean art and archaeology, Asia Pacific studies, Islamic studies, and Latin American studies. Students can earn credits toward these minors by taking selected history courses. See the CHSS minor list for more options.
