How did you decide on the Art History major?

I was interested in history from a young age, particularly Ancient Egyptian history. When I first went to college back in upstate New York I majored in International Studies with a focus on the Middle East. I eventually chose to stop pursuing that degree since my interests had changed. A few years later I sought out a career counselor because I wanted to complete my undergrad. After taking several tests and researching different career types I set my sights on getting my degree in Art History, which complements my interests and skill sets.

Are you minoring or double majoring in anything else? If so, how do the two work together – or  separately?

I have no minor, and I am not double majoring. However, I will be taking several chemistry courses so that I am eligible to become an art conservator.

What have you learned in an art history class that really surprised you/changed your perspective?

I love learning about context in art history. For example, during the Renaissance a patron might request specific amounts of blue to be included in a painting to show off the patrons wealth since blue pigment was very expensive.

There are many modern controversies surrounding museum collections as well as issues of repatriation that I find really interesting and didn't know a lot about before I became an Art History major.

Tell us about your dream occupation…

Becoming an art conservator. Being able to hold history in my hands while ensuring it will be around for future generations. I see art and artifacts as bridges to the past - these objects tells us stories about different people and places. I hope to not only make sure these objects last but also pass along my passion for these objects and for history.

Have you had any internships? Or interesting jobs or volunteer experience? Tell us about it/them.

I haven't had the opportunity yet for any internships or relevant job experiences, but I know that is in my future. I am planning to attend one of GMU's Winter Break trips to gain cultural experience and learn more about the art of a specific place.

Any accomplishments you’re proud of? Opportunities you’ve taken advantage of? Brag a little!

I am a member of Phi Theta Kappa, and Tau Sigma honor societies.  I've made Dean's List every semester since I began attending GMU.

Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.

I am slightly addicted to Ancestry.com and have become interested in genealogies. I discovered that my relatives include several interesting figures including, King Edward I "Longshanks," William the Conqueror, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Scottish Lairds and Vikings, and knights from the court of King Henry VIII. Also my 11th great grandfather, Edward Fuller, was a passenger on the Mayflower.

And...I took belly dance classes for several years and performed at the New York State Fair. I was also a member of the Rochester, NY roller derby team.
