How did you decide on the History major?

Deciding upon the History major took some time for me. I was initially undeclared for a semester or two, taking the general education courses in order to make up my mind. I have always loved history, so it was always in mind as a choice, but I was open to other things as well. However, after taking some great history courses I was convinced that this was the right major for me.

Are you minoring or double majoring in anything else? If so, how do the two work together – or separately?

I am minoring in Legal Studies and loving it. One thing a history lover comes to admire in their studies is the law, an ever enduring facet of any society. I enjoy talking about law and its effects on society and I especially enjoy anything to do with the Constitution, an important part of America’s past and present. Law and history for me go hand in hand, so it was an easy choice to make.

What have you learned in a history class that really surprised you/changed your perspective?

Prior to attending university, I was primarily a western European history fanatic and had no time for very much else. However, once I started taking courses about Asia, and China in particular, it was like I had discovered an entirely new world. These civilizations had been around for thousands of years and I knew practically nothing about them. Discovering the incredible complexity and richness of these cultures astounded me. They were so different from what I was used to that it immediately drew me in. I took it upon myself to start studying Middle Eastern, African, and American histories out of inspiration to see what else I was missing out on. A great lesson for any student: don’t limit your own horizons for lack of experience.

Tell us about your dream occupation…

I suppose I’ve never really given this type of question too much thought! I would have to say some sort of coordinator/reenactor for a European historical site if I’m being honest. To be able to decide upon whether or not the site would have a joust or battle and whether or not I want to participate would be incredible. I would love to study a piece of history and be able to go to work every day to educate people who are genuinely interested. This dream stems from the many reenactments I was fortunate enough to attend as a child!

Have you had any internships? Or interesting jobs or volunteer experience? Tell us about it/them.

I have yet to participate in an internship, but I am looking forward to having an opportunity like that, especially if it concerns history or law. As for an interesting job, I would have to say working at a grocery. The amount of interactions with random people every day makes it easy to come home with more than a few intriguing stories. People are willing to open up quite a bit if you’re friendly enough! Whether or not that’s a good thing is another story.

Any accomplishments you’re proud of? Opportunities you’ve taken advantage of? Brag a little!

I am definitely proud of being on the Dean’s List for four semesters! One of those things that you get to tell inquisitive family members who ask how university is going. I also was invited to join Phi Alpha Theta, the National Honor Society in History, which is a great addition to the resume! I hope to also have the opportunity to present a paper at one of their national conventions at some point in my academic career.

Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.

I am currently in the process of teaching myself to play the guitar and to paint! I was inspired by some excellent classical guitar I heard one day and decided that I would like to be able to play something that beautiful. Luckily, I come from playing the violin for many years, so it is not such a big leap. As for painting I was inspired by the works of Monet, like I’m sure so many others have been before me. His impressionist style is my inspiration and I hope to eventually develop my own!
