Section Information for Spring 2023

How does the history we are taught in school change when we look at it through Crockpots, Chryslers, and contraceptives? This survey will cover the history of the modern United States after Reconstruction by exploring the forces that affected the lives of ordinary Americans. Alongside traditional topics of study, this course covers additional themes such as technology, urbanization and suburbanization, family, food, and work and leisure. During our discussions we will continuously ask: what did Americans do in this period? Who did they work for? How did they make money, and what did they spend it on? Where did Americans live, and why did so many of them move in this period? And how did one’s race, ethnicity, and gender affect the answers to these questions? Ultimately, this course aims to explore the diverse ways everyday Americans experienced the magnitude of social changes in the last century.
