Section Information for Fall 2022

In this course, we will explore the sweeping changes that mark the history of human civilization. We will examine a number of cultural, political, and economic milestones as societies evolve around the world, from King Hammurabi and Emperor Qin to the governments and regimes of our own time.  We will also examine the role of religion, political and social structures, economic theories, industrialization, and the ideals of classical humanism and democracy, through the examination of primary source documents. By the end of the semester, I hope you will have a greater insight into patterns of global change over time, and will have the critical thinking skills necessary to assess the changes our world has seen, comparing societies across time and place, and make history your own.

By focusing on historical experiences that reflect the diversity of Mason’s student body, students will be able to see how their families and communities fit within, and contribute to, global history from the pre-modern period to our present day. This course offers a long-term historical perspective on structural issues challenging our world today, including demographic and environmental changes, national and global inequalities, and the underrepresentation of marginalized groups. Students will gain an understanding of how interconnections and inter-dependencies have been forged through the global movement of people, pathogens, goods, and ideas. Limited to three attempts.
