Section Information for Fall 2023

To many, globalization, or “inter-connectedness,” is a modern phenomenon. The reality is that for centuries, if not millennia, civilizations across regions and hemispheres have been linked to one another through exploration, commerce, religion, colonization, conflict, migration, and disease. Using the idea of globalization as an investigative lens, HIST 125 examines world history from roughly 1000 CE to the present. Students will be asked to contemplate the ways in which empires, trade, revolutions, social movements, industrialization, decolonization, world wars, culture, and political ideologies impacted global history. HIST 125 is lecture based, though time will be devoted to classroom discussion. Students will also spend time analyzing and interpreting primary sources.

This course offers a long-term historical perspective on structural issues challenging our world today, including demographic and environmental changes, national and global inequalities, and the underrepresentation of marginalized groups.
