Section Information for Fall 2023
This course examines the history of colonial Spanish and Portuguese America from the pre-contact period to independence in the early 19th century. We will study wars of conquest; the ecological, cultural and economic effects of contact among Indigenous Americans, Africans, and Europeans; the trade in commodities such as cochineal and silver, colonial political and religious structures; and labor systems including slavery.
