This course will examine the events and processes that have shaped the modern Middle East. After a brief review of the region's pre-modern history, the focus will be on challenges confronting the various nation-states of the region, such as the impact of economic modernization, the consequences of war and civil war, the issue of gender, and ideological change and the Arab Spring. These topics will be investigated based on readings, documentaries, literature and films by and about the Middle East.
