Section Information for Fall 2023
Join us as we explore the ancient civilizations which gave birth to the modern world! Together, we will critically examine the emergence, growing pains and maturity of the many Greek communities scattered throughout the Ancient Mediterranean—from Athens and Sparta to the Kingdom of Macedon, with trips to Sicily in the mix as well! Along the way we will explode a few myths, from “300” to Plato’s “Republic” and beyond. We will also trace the epic Greek experiment with democracies, oligarchies, and monarchies, and read deeply into their literary, historical and philosophical traditions.
