Section Information for Fall 2021
This course is a survey of modern Chinese history focusing primarily on the nineteenth through the mid-twentieth centuries (1800-1950). The course will explore the momentous changes in the relationship between state and society from the decline and eventual collapse of the Qing dynasty to the earliest years of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949-1950. Themes to be explored include imperialism, nationalism, modernization, and various revolutions (political, social, and cultural) during this century and a half of Chinese history.
