Section Information for Spring 2020

Is Islam a religion or merely a political ideology as has been claimed by some?  This course will explore the relationship between the religious doctrine of Islam and the political experience of Muslims from the 7th century to the present.  Topics like the institution of the caliphate, the difference between Sunni and Shii branches of Islam, and the role of Islamic law in Muslim states and societies will be addressed, based on a review of primary and secondary sources.  This course satisfies the Mason Core Global Understanding requirement or the CHSS Non-Western Culture requirement, and it can count for elective credits for majors in History or Global Affairs or for minors in Middle East and Islamic Studies.
