Section Information for Fall 2023
Encounter the scribes, kings, judges, prophets, priests and everyday people of Ancient Israel as we explore what we know of the world and the communities that produced the Hebrew Bible. In order to do so, this course focuses on the critical study of primary artifacts--biblical and extra-biblical texts, iconography and archaeology—to trace the history and religion of Ancient Israel from its origins around 1250 BCE to Babylonian Exile in 587 BCE. Topics include scholarly debate on the historical value of biblical narratives, the move from polytheism to monotheism, the formation of the biblical text and canon, the position of Israel in the larger Ancient Near East, and the development of Israel's unique religious and historical self-understanding.
