Section Information for Fall 2014

When World War II began in 1939, Americans were still struggling with the aftermath of the Great Depression.  Not least, they overwhelmingly opposed any involvement in the rest of the world’s troubles.  The country was firmly isolationist with a military to match.  On the eve of war, the US Army ranked only 17th in the world.  By 1945, all had changed.  America’s wealth had doubled and it was one of the world’s only two superpowers.  This course looks at the years in between to examine how the war affected American attitudes toward race, the role of women in society, and the seeds of the military-industrial complex, as well as America’s role in the wartime alliance of nations that defeated fascism in Europe and Japanese militarism in Asia.
