Section Information for Fall 2014

From Antiques Road Show to Do-It-Yourself Crafts Americans love making, buying, and selling things.  This course will introduce students to American architecture and the decorative arts.  We will explore how Americans have designed and used “stuff” through study of furniture, clothing, dining equipment, and buildings. Beginning in the early colonial period and continuing to the present, we will investigate how many different groups of Americans—blacks, whites, Native Americans, women, and new immigrants—have used decorative arts to express who they are. Journeying from the fork to the ipad, Americans have long relied on material things to tell others about themselves.  In addition to a midterm and a final, this course will also require a museum visit and other short writing assignments.
