Modern surveillance techniques track us as citizens and as consumers. The origins of the modern surveillance state lie in detective stories, in mug shots and the invention of fingerprints, in forensic anthropology and racial typing, in the pioneering efforts of advertisers. This course examines the multiple roots of the modern surveillance state from 1850-1930.
