Your journey to Native America starts here! Millions of people, thousands of years, hundreds of societies formed the American continent before Europeans reached this shore.  Great cities rose and fell. Bioengineers transformed forests into sustainable systems. Agronomists invented a superfood, maize corn, to be traded across vast networks. A prophet instituted a democratic matriarchal government that influenced the United States' Founding Fathers and continues to this day. The indigenous world confronted an irrevocable, continual cataclysm when Columbus made landfall 500 years ago. Successive imperial incursions disrupted Native peoples through three colonial centuries. Some indigenous societies strategically shifted to adapt while others collapsed. When the United States won the American Revolution, another new system affected Native Americans in ways that operate today. Our class will move the historic gaze to look out from a Native center, drawing from a variety of sources. We will incorporate a public history approach to add to this dynamic learning experience.
