This seminar focuses on the American South during the period just before the Civil War, 1815-60. Course readings are intended to help the students gain an understanding of major historical questions in this area. The major thrust of this course is the writing of a research paper, roughly 20-30 pages long, which is based on primary sources and also utilizes important secondary sources. Students will be able to choose from a range of social, political, cultural, and military subjects; research topics that utilize local history are welcomed. In this course students will learn to define their research topic, undertake historical research and write and revise well organized, well argued papers.

Research on specialized historical topic culminating in seminar paper and oral presentation. Synthesis course; students expected to integrate knowledge and skills acquired in Mason Core courses. Notes: Subject determined by instructor. Student may present no more than 3 credits for graduation credit. Must receive passing grade to graduate with BA in history. Limited to three attempts.

Recommended Prerequisite: History majors with 90 credits
