Section Information for Fall 2022
This course is the capstone of the History major. Students are required to produce a substantial research paper based on their reading of primary and secondary sources from the founding era of American history. This period is broadly construed as encompassing the entire era that includes the French and Indian War, the American War for Independence, the writing of the U.S. Constitution, and the post-revolutionary era until about 1820. In consultation with the instructor, students will focus on a topic of their choice, which can range from traditional political or military topics to include issues relating to women, Native Americans, slavery, religion, or culture more generally. Explorations of transatlantic connections, including revolutionary France and Haiti, are also possible. After reading a short text providing a brief overview of the American Revolution, students, with the assistance of the instructor, will focus their attention on the various stages of the research and writing process. This course is very time-intensive. Students are invited to email the instructor before the semester to discuss possible topics.
